What calcium supplements to take?

Calcium supplements have been highly recommended for a long time, and doctors still recommend them. The problem is that they are not specific as to what type of calcium to take, so people walk into a drugstore and buy something inexpensive that says "Calcium" on the label, or just chew on lots of Tums. Well, that's dead wrong! Because if that's what you do, dead is what you'll be.

An enlightened doctor who keeps up with the health news and research would never tell you to just drink lots of milk and munch on Tums like candy!

The best calcium is the one that is in green leafy vegetables. The calcium in dairy products isn't absorbed by our bodies as well and may lead to calcium deposits, which can actually make the bones more brittle, as well as cause kidney stones, gull bladder stones and calcification of the arteries leading to high blood pressure and heart disease. American women eat more dairy products than many other nations, but have the highest incidence of osteoporosis. Vegans, for example, have healthy calcium levels and strong bones, without any dairy at all.

What about Tums? They contain calcium carbonate, which is basically chalk and has very low absorption. In fact, don't buy any supplements that say on the label: calcium carbonate. That's the cheapest form of calcium and has the worst absorption rate. Calcium carbonate has been found to cause kidney stones and other problems.

Also, you shouldn't be taking calcium supplements without magnesium and vitamin K and D. Most supplements don't balance calcium, vitamin D, K, and magnesium correctly. If you take lots of calcium without magnesium, you can be low on magnesium, which causes restless legs, anxiety, irritability, sleep problems, headaches, brittle nails, nausea, and many other unpleasant symptoms. Lack of vitamin D causes bone fractures and fragility. Vitamin D and K direct calcium into the bones, instead of tissues, blood vessels and other wrong places where it would cause a problem.

Most supplements on the market that I looked at contain calcium carbonate and wrong amounts of vitamins D and magnesium. I finally found one that is made from seaweeds called Calcium from the Sea. It is easy to digest and absorb, and has lots of other beneficial qualities, since kelp is generally very good for you. And it is amazingly inexpensive, considering the quality.
